Abstract:

Buildings are typically equipped with many appliances, e.g., bulbs, air-conditioners, televisions. Residents or employees may face some inconvenience and waste time when trying to control appliances through control panels located far away. This project presents the Personalized Monitoring and Control of Office Buildings Using NFC on Smartphones, developed to aid those users. The Android-based application displays the floor plan for each room and appliances’ positions in the room, allowing users to control them. In addition,
users’ personalized settings can also be preconfigured. The application employs the NFC technology to connect a smartphone to appliance controllers, so users can use their smartphones as universal remote controls that adapt to each room’s environment. Evaluation shows that the users are able to use their phones as appliances’ controllers and preconfigure their personalized settings. In addition, battery consumption of smartphones increases very little while running the application.
